Milestone Achievements in Europe
In 2023, wind energy accounted for an impressive 19% of all electricity generated in Europe.
The European Union made significant strides in the renewable energy sector, adding 17 GW of new wind energy to its portfolio. WindEurope data reveals that of the 17 GW of new wind energy added, 14 GW were onshore, and 3 GW were offshore. Leading the charge in capacity additions were Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden. Notably, the Netherlands took the spotlight by inaugurating the colossal 1.5 GW "Hollandse Kust Zuid," currently the world's largest wind farm. This achievement is noteworthy, representing an increase from the previous year and marking the highest annual installation of wind energy in the EU's history.
However, it's imperative to recognize that this remarkable progress falls short of the EU's ambitious 2030 targets of a minimum of 42.5% renewable energy target.

What's next?
Looking ahead, the International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that Europe will maintain a pace of 23 GW of annual wind energy installation between 2024 and 2028. The comprehensive actions proposed in the EU Wind Power Package are poised to drive significant growth in the wind energy sector while strengthening Europe's supply chain. The critical factor for success remains the diligent implementation of these actions at the national level.
A pivotal milestone was achieved as 26 EU Energy Ministers pledged their commitment to deliver the Wind Power Package in the European Wind Charter before Christmas. Key actions include streamlining permitting processes, optimizing auction designs for new wind farm construction, and providing crucial financial support for wind turbine manufacturing and key infrastructure. Perhaps most notable is the recent development of Europe’s first “energy islands”. These innovative projects represent a new frontier in renewable energy generation, playing a crucial role in not only powering our green future but also exporting clean energy to neighbouring regions.
Scotland's Ascent: From Renewable Energy Pioneer to European Electricity Exporter
While the European Union continues to make strides in wind energy, Scotland stands out as a beacon of innovation and progress in the realm of renewables, particularly offshore wind.
Scotland is on the verge of an extraordinary transformation – one that will not only secure its position as a renewable energy pioneer but also propel it into the role of a significant electricity exporter to neighbouring European countries.
Scotland's renewable energy potential is nothing short of remarkable. Its rugged coastline stretches for thousands of kilometers, harnessing the power of the North Sea's relentless winds. In addition, its diverse landscape offers abundant opportunities for hydroelectric, solar, and tidal energy generation. Scotland's commitment to offshore wind is steering the nation towards unprecedented success. With vast offshore wind farms in operation and more in development, Scotland is poised to capitalize on its wind energy potential.

Exporting Clean Energy
As Scotland's renewable energy capacity continues to grow, it is increasingly well-positioned to become an exporter of clean electricity to other European countries. Its surplus energy can power communities across borders, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and accelerating the transition to a greener, more sustainable future.
Scotland's plans for electricity exports are reinforced by its commitment to interconnectivity. Projects like the NorthConnect interconnector, linking Scotland with Norway, and the Viking Link interconnector, linking Scotland with Denmark, demonstrates the nation's dedication to sharing its clean energy wealth with its European neighbours.
As Scotland forges ahead on its path to becoming a renewable energy powerhouse and electricity exporter to Europe, it not only charts a course toward energy independence but also sets an inspiring example for the world. The transition to clean energy is no longer a vision but a tangible reality, and Scotland's leadership in this endeavour is a testament to the boundless possibilities that lie ahead.
